How to Spot Good AI Opportunities in Your Business

“We know AI is supposed to help, we just don’t know where to start” is something we hear from almost every business we speak to. The good news is that spotting a genuine AI opportunity isn’t about knowing the technology — it’s about knowing your own business well enough to notice the right kind of task.

Look for Repetition First

The clearest sign of a good AI opportunity is a task you or your team do the same way, over and over, with only small variations each time. Repeated emails, recurring reports, standard replies — anything that follows a pattern is worth a closer look.

Look for Tasks That Take Longer Than They Feel Like They Should

If a task feels disproportionately time-consuming for how simple it actually is — writing up notes, drafting a routine reply, pulling together a summary — that gap between effort and value is often exactly where AI helps most.

Look for Bottlenecks Around One Person

If a task always waits for one particular person because they’re the one who writes the reports, or answers a certain type of enquiry, that’s worth examining. AI won’t replace their judgement, but it can often take on the drafting so the bottleneck matters less.

Tasks That Are Not Good AI Opportunities

Not everything is a fit. Tasks that need real relationship building, sensitive judgement calls, or a decision only you should make aren’t good candidates — and forcing AI into them tends to cause more problems than it solves. The aim is picking the right jobs, not the most jobs.

A Simple Way to Audit Your Week

Try this: for one week, jot down every task that felt repetitive, slow, or like “the same thing again.” At the end of the week, look at the list and ask which of those follow a pattern clear enough to describe to someone else. Those are your starting points.

Starting Small

Pick one task from that list — not the biggest, just the clearest — and try using AI for it for a fortnight. A small, well-chosen starting point tells you far more than trying to overhaul several processes at once, and it’s much easier to judge whether it’s actually working.

When to Get an Outside View

If you’ve done this exercise and you’re still not sure which task is worth starting with, that’s exactly what an AI Readiness Audit is for — a structured look across your business to find the clearest, safest opportunities, rather than guessing.
